Hired by former superior at Merrill Lynch who had moved to DB to head FX research. Decided short-term view on yen for DB FX research and represented the house view on other currencies to Japanese clients.

  • Named one of best creators of short-term trades in Euromoney Japan 2004 poll and #5 among currency strategists in Japan in 2003 Asiamoney poll, the sole ranked non-Japanese analyst.
  • Grew Japanese business by establishing relationships with hedge funds, multinationals, major institutional investors, and domestic corporations. Made presentations in Japanese.
  • Boosted profitability of trading operation with successful trading recommendations and immediate reaction to market-moving headlines. The Tokyo desk’s profits doubled from $30M to $60M.

Head, Asian FX and Rates Research  - 1998-2002

Managed five-person group?  Bank of America’s entire Asian research effort at the time. Served as G10 FX and fixed income specialist for Asian clients. Decided house view and made recommendations on region’s currencies and bonds. I was the Japan economist, forecasting the overall economy and monthly economic indicators.

Key highlights:

  • Earned first large FX trade with BofA by prominent US West Coast fund management firm (a $2bn option).
  • Raised bank’s profile significantly and increased revenues by developing well-received research product.


Head of Economic Research:  Headed up a four-person group while acting as fixed income & FX strategist.


  • Fixed Income Strategist:  Ranked #4 bond market strategist in Japan April 1997 Institutional Investor survey and #6 in Nikkei Newsletter on Bonds & Money poll of domestic investors in 1996 (when ML was the #13 firm).
